Last year Mike Posner had a big breakout hit, "Cooler than Me", as well as a follow-up, "Please Don't Go", which did pretty good; now we'll find out if he can keep himself afloat. "Bow Chicka Wow Wow" is a slow jazzy love song with familiar vocals from Posner. Unfortunately, it may be a little too familiar since it sounds very similar to "Please Don't Go." A similar idea lyrically as well as a pretty much identical musical structure. The only difference is that the bouncy electric beats have been replaced with a jazzy guitar.
That's not the only problem with the song, though. It's not hard to see that with a name like "Bow Chicka Wow Wow" it'll have some nonsense lyrics; and I've had this rant before. In a dance song I can tolerate extra gibberish words if it makes the song flow; this is a dance song and I have no idea what, "Once I throw on this Bow Chicka Wow Wow" is supposed to mean. It seems completely unnecessary to even have something like that in the song, the entire song should be called something different. Perhaps there is some meaning to the lyric that I'm not seeing, but if have to serious analyze a song to understand a lyrics I think that the song failed. Furthermore, there is also a guitar as a lyric ("I can make you sound like *guitar*) which is just as bad as made up words since it doesn't really mean anything.
Overall I don't think Posner really worked hard enough on this song. If you liked "Please Don't Go" then you'll probably still appreciate this song, but he'd better try harder on his next single.
